Despite the language barrier, Costa Ricans are incredibly friendly and helpful and very welcoming. I often had to compete with grazing cattle while down by the river.Īll in all a great trip even though there weren\'t a lot of fish to be had. They occasionally show up in the tropical fish trade, and have incredibly long whiskers and adipose fins. There are other closely related species in this river so I'm not sure if I caught more than one variety. I believe it's a fish called Rhamdia guatemalensis, or Barbudo locally. I only caught the one Machaca but I caught quite a few of this little catfish both the third and fourth day. I wouldn't want to stick a finger in its mouth. The teeth on the bottom jaw are almost human, and there's weird looking grinders on the top for crushing seeds and fruit. It's a characin, in the same family as the piranha. I immediately caught this machaca, a fish I really wanted to catch. All I had was a can of smoked calamari in jerk sauce. On the third day, after our guided morning fishing trip was over, Cara and I took matters into our own hands and went still fishing on the river from shore. Jimmy, and indeed other Ticos I met, didn't seem to like using it despite the slow action. It was hard to get a clear answer about using bait on the river. Gar - both alligator and tropical - and tarpon were rising everywhere. The fish were few and far in between but that didn't mean there were no fish. Amazing.Ībout as close as I could get to that damn fish. In fact, their presence at Cano Negro - complete freshwater and hundreds of miles from the ocean - is pretty poorly advertised. I wasn't really expecting to hook into tarpon on this trip. It was loaded with 25 lbs mono with a 90 lbs fluorocarbon leader. Here's some pics from that battle:įish on - I was using a cheap ass Daiwa medium-heavy rod and a Shimano Thunnus 1600 reel I bought specifically for the trip. I got my "leader touch" and was able to get my hand around the fish's tail but it slipped out of my grasp and down the river. It was tired at the side of the boat but then the line caught on another snag and it snapped. One heart-pounding jump in front of the boat and then off into brush and root tangles at the shoreline where there were quickly lost, but I fought the last fish for about 20 minutes before losing it. The other fish were lost after just a couple minutes. Losing the last tarpon on the second day was the most heartbreaking. We were rained out the fourth day and didn't hook anything. The third day I caught the gar and missed a tarpon, while Cara lost a gar more than five feet long. The first day I hooked and lost one tarpon, missed another and lost a gar, the second day I lost two tarpon - both well over a 100 lbs. In fact, we only landed one fish during the entire guided portion of the trip - a smallish alligator gar. They call muskie the fish of a 1,000 casts but Cara and I made considerably more than that in pursuit of gar and freshwater river tarpon. All the fishing was with artificials, primarily Rapala plugs and jerkbaits. Cara and I set out down the river with our guide "Jimmy." His English was about as good as my Spanish so communication was difficult. Truth be told the fishing, while an amazing experience, was somewhat frustrating. It's home to dozens of species of rare birds, reptiles and amphibians, and of course, fish. Cano Negro is a flood plain at the extreme north end of the country, which drains into Lake Nicaragua across the border. My wife and I just got back from Costa Rica for our honeymoon where we spent four days fishing the Rio Frio in the Cano Negro nature preserve. Not all of this trip involved true rough fishing but I thought some of you might appreciate the photos. Author's note: There were no alligator gar on this trip. So you want to be really careful of any electronics, phone chargers, that kind of thing. If a phone charger was left plugged into the wall in a bathroom, the cleaning crew would have pulled that out. “Hotel housekeepers are specifically instructed to sweep rooms for items left behind by previous guests. “Lastly, pay attention to items that seem out of place,” advises Andrews. You would know it was a camera if it had an SD card slot, like a digital camera.” Next, Andrews would examine the smoke detector to see if there was a tiny black dot - the telltale sign of a camera lens. Is it pointing at the bed? I would just pick it up, turn it over and look at it. “If I walk into a hotel room, I'm going to look at the alarm clock,” says Andrews. And green just tells you what else is connected to your Wi-Fi network.”Įven if you don’t have an app, it always pays to be smart about your surroundings. Yellow identifies non-covert devices that can be accessed from the internet that might include a Nest camera or a similar standard security camera. Red means that there’s a high probability that this is a spy camera. “There's a red box, a yellow box, and a green box. “We make it really simple,” says Andrews. “Our app is able to distinguish a covert camera on the network based on where it’s reaching out to on the cloud.” “Spy cameras act differently on a network than standard security cameras,” explains Andrews. It will also scan for suspicious devices on Wi-Fi, local networks and Bluetooth. Using the camera and flashlight on your smartphone, Hidden Camera Detector can help detect the pinhole lens of a spycam in a room. The iPhone app is free to try for three days and then has a $3.99-a-month subscription. Launched several years ago, the Hidden Camera Detector app has received a surge in downloads over the past six months and now boasts over half a million users, according to Andrews. With the rapid increase in the number of hidden cameras has come a slew of ways to protect your privacy, including a large number of detection apps. We were able to show him how to log in to the camera and prove that it was streaming video.” How to Find a Hidden Camera The renter was still suspicious and sent us a photo of the device. “The host claimed that it wasn’t a camera but just a motion sensor. “We recently had someone reach out to us after our app detected a hidden camera in the living room of their Airbnb,” says Andrews. Still, violations happen, and Andrews says his company receives multiple reports from travelers per week. Under no circumstances is any type of camera allowed in any bedrooms or bathrooms. Hosts may install non-covert security cameras and other recording devices in the common areas of the home, as long as the devices are disclosed to renters. For example, Airbnb’s policy specifically prohibits hidden cameras. Generally speaking, it's legal in the United States to use hidden cameras to record surveillance video in your home, but covert surveillance in a rental property is a violation of most vacation rental companies’ policies. The same poll found that one in 10 guests (11%) had found hidden cameras in an Airbnb rental. Nearly six in 10 (58%) Airbnb guests are worried about hidden cameras in vacation rentals, according to a survey by property investment firm IPX1031 of over 2,000 Airbnb guests. Anyone can do it.”Ĭlearly, the recent uptick of spycams in the news is making travelers jumpy. And they all have simple, do-it-yourself set-ups. “They're not only recording on board the device, where you have to go and retrieve an SD card to get the video. Today, the latest spycams will run on a Wi-Fi network and reach out to cloud-based servers. “Back in the old days, even four years ago, if you had a security camera and wanted to view the video online, you had to do complex firewall administration,” says Andrews. Each item is designed to be inconspicuous, like the hardover book for $49.99 or photo frame for $99.99 that would look perfectly harmless sitting on a fireplace mantel or in a bookcase inside a vacation rental or hotel suite.Īnother reason for the spread of spycams is that they have become so easy to use. Most of these products are priced under $100 for example, there’s a USB wall charger for $28.87, a smoke detector for $58.99 and a digital alarm clock for $76.99. Indeed, a quick search for “hidden spy cameras” on reveals thousands of everyday items sold with embedded micro cameras. The footage also shows Myeni said “sorry” as he left the home. A Ring video – obtained through a wrongful death lawsuit brought by Myeni’s widow, Lindsay, and released in June – showed Myeni entering the rental, which Lindsay has said she thinks her husband believed was a Hare Krishna temple on the same block. On 14 April, Honolulu police fatally shot Myeni after being called out to a rental property. Young Iremamber Sykap fishing in Hawaii with his grandmother in 2012. The charges mark the first time a Honolulu officer has been prosecuted in a police shooting since 1979 and if convicted, all three officers would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Thom has since been charged with one count of murder in the second degree, while two other officers involved in the killing were charged with one count of attempted murder in the second degree. Thom shot and hit the teen eight times – in the back of his head, neck, and back, and in his left arm. Police said the car Sykap was driving had been linked to other crimes and that they saw a firearm, but video described in court documents from the city’s prosecuting attorney later revealed it was only a cellphone.Īccording to the court documents, officer Geoffrey Thom, 42, started firing his gun “without provocation” into Sykap’s car while it was stationary. On 5 April, Iremamber Sykap, 16, was shot and killed by Honolulu police after a car chase. “We really like to say it’s a racial paradise and it’s a mixing pot,” she adds, saying this means discrimination can get swept under the rug because people are reluctant to face it. “I think it’s a lot harder to call out racism here because of the history of Hawaii,” says Nikkya Taliaferro, a 17-year-old activist and the former executive director of the youth-led advocacy group Hawaii for Black Lives. Last year, investigations by local news outlets showed that Honolulu police officers disproportionately arrested and used force against Black people and Pacific Islanders. Because of this, many people of color experience less discrimination and racism in Hawaii than on the mainland, but it is not a paradise for everyone. Immigrants from a broad swathe of places – including China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Portugal – have found their way to Hawaii over the last 200 years, making it one of the most diverse states in the US. He also noted that it took a federal investigation to reveal that the former Honolulu police chief, Louis Kealoha, and his wife, Katherine Kealoha, who was a deputy prosecuting attorney, had committed crimes including framing her uncle and stealing money from her grandmother. This is in part due to Hawaii’s history of being traditionally trusting of law enforcement, said Lawson, who is Black, noting that “people here are willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt,” despite a lack of transparency that is consistent with many mainland police departments. Lindani Myeni on a beach in Hawaii with his wife and two children. Kenneth Lawson, a civil rights academic at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa law school, said if the shootings had happened on the mainland, there would have been a greater backlash. The responses to Myeni and Sykap’s deaths have not been entirely muted there have been protests calling for justice and police reform, but also counter rallies in support of the Honolulu police department. The reaction to police killings on Oʻahu may differ from the mainland because of the diverse racial demographics on the island and within the police force itself, some say, while others point out that Hawaii’s vision of itself as a multicultural paradise has made it harder for those who experience discrimination and racism to speak out. Local civil rights advocates say the reasons behind this are complex and multifaceted. Yet the deaths have struggled to break through into the national conversation, and, while attention has grown as new information emerges, the deaths have failed to prompt the widespread outcry in Hawaii that has turned other victims on the mainland into household names. While there were no witness videos of the killings, the cases involved unarmed people of color, and saw police initially release misleading statements about the circumstances. Big Good: Richard the Lionheart, and an arguable case with Lord Ranulph and Sir Godwin. They do no harm but will distract multiple enemies in an area. Bee-Bee Gun: Or rather a bee grenade - Friar Tuck can throw beehives as weapons.Artificial Stupidity: On the other hand, black guards will remain at their post even if they see a fight in progress, until the fight has ended, and will not pursue the player far.Blue and orange guards tend to rush into battle, while red guards are more cautious and will seek backup. They'll also wake up and untie incapacitated enemies and seek civilian assistance, to say nothing of interrogating beggars in case one is fake. Artificial Brilliance: Guards will run extensive searches throughout every open area, call for backup, and report to their superiors. The allied civilians are clad in varieties of green, a grace not given in the company's sister game (see above). The better dressed and groomed civilians will often report any sightings of the player characters, while poor civilians will praise them, sometimes misdirect guards if they come looking for them and offer valuable information.Averted with Richard the Lionheart, Sir Godwin, Lord Ranulph and Robin himself (he is of noble family). Also, enemy knights are shown to be contemptuous of the regular soldiers and just as brutal as their underlings, while the mounted ones are not above killing unconscious opponents. The game's major villains are a prince, the famous sheriff, two nobles stated to be the prince's right and left hand men (at least in the region), respectively, and a rather brutal knight. As for the knights and paladins, your arrows completely bounce off of their armour. However, enemies carrying shields can block arrows, and each individual character can only carry about twelve arrows each. Your arrows, on the other hand, are a lot more powerful, often killing unshielded enemies in just one or two shots. Enemy arrows (and enemy crossbow bolts, to a lesser extent) deal fairly low damage, and are only dangerous because archers can fire them fairly rapidly. Annoying Arrows: Both played straight and averted.Rather than the medieval sling that's swung around to throw a projectile, it's a modern Y-shaped slingshot. Anachronism Stew: Will Scarlet carries a slingshot around. She heals, has a bow with a 12 arrow quiver, can revive unconscious people, listens to detect the identity of shrouded units, and packs a deadly sword to boot. The last major character to join, and a major asset. He does, however, complain how exhausting fighting is. Acrofatic: Friar Tuck can run pretty fast and become as nimble in combat as any other character despite his physique.Like Desperados (which was released the year prior), it utilizes a 2.5D engine with quick action queuing and the ability to see enemy vision cones. It was developed by the German studio Spellbound, who created Desperados before. Since insecticide is a group of pesticides, they are similar in many ways. What is the difference between Insecticides and Pesticides? Therefore, novel techniques of pesticide applications take place in an environmental friendly pathway. Since pesticides can have an adverse effect on non targeted organisms, safety precautions are a must in pesticide application. It should ensure the improvement of properties of the pesticide, handling, effectiveness and safety. Pesticide formulation is the most important part in the pesticide application. Synthetic pesticides are manufactured as a technical grade material (T.C.) including active ingredient. Also, pesticides are at different physical status including granules, emulsifiable concentrates, granules, Wettable powders, water soluble powders and dispersible concentrates. Pesticides classified based on the chemical composition include inorganic, organic, synthetic, natural or botanical pesticides. Pesticides classified according to the target organism include insecticides (killing agents of insects), termicides (killing agents of termites), tickicides (killing agents of ticks), avicides (Killing agents of birds), miticides (killing agents of mites) etc. They are target organism, chemical nature and the physical structure. There are three methods of classification of pesticides. One is “any substance or mixture of substances, intended for preventing, destroying or controlling pests”, and the other is “an economical poison uses for preventing, destroying repelling or mitigating any animal pest, pathogen or a weed”. There are two definitions for pesticides. Therefore, they could adversely affect human being and the environment. Sap feeding insects are more susceptible for systemic insecticides. Therefore, systemic insecticides are incorporated with plants. Systemic insecticides kill insects through feeding, and contact insecticides kill insects through direct contact with the insect’s body. Also, there is another classification by the mode of action, which includes stomach toxicants, contact toxicants, systemic toxicants, and fumigants. Insecticides that are classified according to the chemical nature include inorganic compounds, botanical insecticides, organochloride compounds, organophosporus compounds, carbamate, synthetic pyrethroid, and chitin inhibitor. Insecticides are classified under several categories. Most of the insecticides target the egg or larval stage of insects. Insecticide is a pesticide, which is used to prevent, destroy, repel, or to control insect pests under the economical threshold level. Therefore, this article intends to discuss the characteristics of both pesticides and insecticides. Despite the similarities between the two, there are some differences, as well. Most of the time the terms “pesticide” and “insecticide” are used interchangeably. Therefore, there is a relationship between them. |
